Data Privacy concerns as Zoom changes its Terms of Service

In a black mirror-like turn of events, Zoom (the video-conferencing application) changed its terms of service in sections 10.2 and 10.4 discusses how Zoom will handle user data in regards to training its Ai

10.2 says that customers “consent to Zoom’s access, use, collection, creation, modification, distribution, processing, sharing, maintenance, and storage of Service Generated Data” for “any purpose,” including “machine learning or artificial intelligence (including for the purposes of training and tuning of algorithms and models).

10.4 goes on to state that the customer “agrees to grant and hereby grant Zoom a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license” to use their data for things like “product and service development,” machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

What this means is that:

10.2: Access, Use, Collection, and Processing of Service-Generated Data

Customers are providing Zoom with consent to access, use, collect, create, modify, distribute, process, share, maintain, and store the data that is generated through their use of Zoom's services. This data could include information exchanged during video conferences, chats, recordings, and other interactions on the platform. The consent is given for various purposes, including but not limited to machine learning and artificial intelligence. Zoom can utilize this data to train and improve algorithms and models for its AI technologies.

10.4: Granting a License for Data Usage

Zoom can use the customer's data for purposes such as developing new products and services, improving existing offerings, and enhancing their AI and machine learning capabilities. Essentially, this clause allows Zoom to leverage the data provided by customers to further its business and technological advancements.

Zoom later added a new statement after section 10.4 stating, “Notwithstanding the above, Zoom will not use audio, video or chat Customer Content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent.”

Zoom’s Chief Product Officer Smita Hashim says that account owners and administrators can choose if they want to turn on the features, which are still available on a trial basis, and that people who turn them on will “be presented with a transparent consent process for training our AI models using your customer content.”

If you or your company are active users of Zoom, it's important to exercise vigilance when it comes to any modifications made to the platform's terms of service. These alterations could potentially lead to unintended consequences, such as inadvertently granting Zoom the authority to employ your data – which could encompass sensitive or confidential information – in ways that align with their own interests and objectives. It's advisable to remain well-informed about any updates to the terms of service to ensure that you fully comprehend the implications of the permissions you might be providing. This proactive approach will help you maintain control over the usage of your data and make informed decisions about its sharing and utilization.
