Google Pixel 8a: Surprise!

The Pixel 8A was a surprise to most tech enthusiasts when it was officially unveiled on 7th May after the Apple Event (very sneaky). The newly announced Pixel 8A launches on May 14 for $499 (KES 65,868.00) in the US.

The new phone has got Google's latest processor, packed with new AI features. But the real gem here is that the 8A is joining the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro in offering a whopping seven years of software support, which is pretty unheard of for a midrange phone.

The Pixel 8A retains the same overall form and dimensions as its predecessor. However, the 6.1-inch display has undergone some significant improvements. The maximum refresh rate has been increased from 90Hz to 120Hz, and the screen's peak brightness has been raised to 2,000 nits, which is 40 per cent brighter. These upgrades are quite significant and noteworthy.

This year, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking the world by storm and the Pixel 8A is no exception. The device is equipped with the same AI-powered photo and video features that amazed people on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. These features include Best Take, Magic Editor, and Audio Magic Eraser.

Additionally, Circle to Search is also included in the device, along with the ability to run Google's mobile-optimized on-device AI model, Gemini Nano. Just like on the Pixel 8, this feature will be available as a Developer option delivered via Feature Drop.

The specs of the latest generation are quite similar to the previous one, with some slight improvements. It still has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but now it also comes with a 256GB option.

Its IP67 rating is consistent with the 7A, and the battery capacity has slightly increased from 4,385 mAh to 4,492 mAh. Wireless charging is available via Qi 1.3, with up to 7.5W charging speed, although it doesn't support Qi2. There are two new A-series colours: Aloe (a limited-edition colour) and Bay, alongside other neutral colour options: Obsidian or Porcelain.

The camera quality of the new Pixel 8A seems to be similar to the previous model, Pixel 7A. The Pixel 8A features a 64-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 13-megapixel front camera. However, upgrading Google's newer Tensor G3 processor may result in better image processing capabilities.
